Lumber Calculator

Convert nominal lumber dimensions (thickness, width, length, and quantity) into standard board feet (BF) and calculate total material costs.

Quick Presets:

How to Calculate Board Feet

Board footage is calculated using the standard US lumber formula:

Board Foot Formulas:

1. Board Feet = (Thickness in Inches × Width in Inches × Length in Feet) ÷ 12

2. Total Board Feet = Single Piece Board Feet × Quantity of Pieces

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are nominal dimensions larger than actual lumber dimensions?

Nominal sizes (such as "2x4") refer to the green, rough-sawn lumber size before it is planed and kiln-dried. The actual dimensions of a finished modern 2x4 are 1-1/2" × 3-1/2". However, board foot volume and pricing are traditionally calculated using the nominal size.
