How to Calculate Square Footage for Flooring

Calculating square footage for flooring involves finding the base room area (Length × Width) in feet and adding an appropriate waste percentage to cover cuts, damaged planks, and end trimmings.

Core Flooring Formulas:

1. Base Area = Room Length (ft) × Room Width (ft)

2. Total Area with Waste = Base Area × (1 + Waste Percentage / 100)

3. Total Boxes Needed = ⌈ Total Area with Waste ÷ Sq Ft Per Box ⌉ (Round Up)

Frequently Asked Questions

What flooring types need higher waste percentages?

Hardwood plank and porcelain tile generally require 10% to 15% waste because pieces cannot be easily spliced together. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) installed in simple rectangular layouts can often be done with 7% to 10% waste.

Should I keep leftover boxes of flooring?

Yes. It is always wise to keep at least 1 full unopened box of flooring stored in a climate-controlled area for future board replacements if water damage or deep scratching occurs.
