How to Calculate Gravel in Tons and Yards

Quarries and aggregate haulers sell bulk gravel either by the cubic yard or by weight in short tons (1 ton = 2,000 lbs).

Gravel Volume & Weight Formulas:

1. Cubic Feet = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth in inches ÷ 12)

2. Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27

3. Total Tons = Cubic Yards × 1.4 tons/yd³ (standard density of 2,800 lbs/yd³)

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

For a new driveway from bare soil, you need a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of total aggregate depth (typically a coarse subbase layer like #3 crushed stone topped with 2 inches of finer gravel like #57 or Crusher Run). For refreshing an existing driveway, a 2 to 3-inch top layer is sufficient.

What is the difference between crushed stone and pea gravel?

Crushed stone has angular, jagged edges that lock together tightly when compacted, making it the superior choice for driveways and paver bases. Pea gravel has smooth, rounded pebbles that roll under pressure, making it ideal for decorative garden paths and dog runs.
